Metro isn't a monopoly, it's a subsidized public benefit. There has to be some kind of transportation infrastructure. Anyway a lot more people are killed by cars than by Metro buses.
The first roads in this country were built privately, as were the first railroads. We were the world's leader in mass transit in 1900, because it was all private. Downtown by Fogelson is one book that reveals that. I've got it if you want to borrow it.
